How to choose classic bricks

Buy a mixed box before you buy a model. A themed set is assembled once, admired for a week and then lives in pieces at the bottom of a tub; a general brick box with plates, slopes, arches and a handful of wheels is rebuilt for years, which is where the value in this category actually sits. If bricks are already in the house, check the stud pitch on the listing — the standard is 8mm centre to centre and nearly everything sold here matches it, but a few large-format toddler ranges do not. Baseplates are worth one extra purchase because they stop a tall build collapsing when it is carried. For under-fours, choose the large format instead: standard bricks are a choking hazard and, more prosaically, too stiff for small fingers to separate.

Questions

Classic Bricks questions parents ask

Do these fit bricks we already have at home?

Our classic bricks use the standard 8mm stud pitch and clip firmly onto the major brick brands. Large-format toddler bricks are a separate system and do not interlock with these.

Is a themed set or a plain box better value?

A plain mixed box, in almost every case. Themed sets are built to the instructions and then dismantled; a mixed box with varied shapes stays in use because there is always something else to build.

What age can start with small bricks?

Four and up. Below that the pieces are a choking risk and the clip strength is genuinely hard for small hands. Large-format blocks are the right answer for one to three.
